Built in 1992, James H. Donovan Middle School is located in the southwestern area of Utica.This new facility features spacious classrooms, six modern science laboratories, a large group instruction room, a music wing with a modern auditorium equipped with state of the art audio and lighting systems and direct Internet access from every classroom through a fiber optic line. There are six modern computer labs: a math computer lab, two large computer labs used for Science, English, and general studies, a Career Center equipped with its own computer lab, and two modern CAD computer labs in the Technology wing. The fully automated and networked library has been designated an Electronic Doorway by the New York State Department of Education. We provide electronic access to resources outside our building.
The auditorium is capable of accommodating a fully-staged production. It has been frequently utilized to stage and videotape productions by outside agencies. We offer a comprehensive performing arts program to our students. Besides a full music program, we offer jazz band and steel drums. Also popular with the students is the drama club, which puts on a full-length production each year.
The Physical Education Department has a state of the art fitness room that includes cardio-vascular and weight training equipment. Outdoor facilities include an all-weather track, soccer, football, baseball, and softball fields.
Donovan's technology program is Project Lead the Way/Gateway to Technology, a program designed to spark the students' interest for careers in engineering. In addition, students learn to access and use state of the art communication systems including Internet research, E-mail, Web publishing, video conferencing, and digital photography.
Donovan School has a full-time parent school liasion to foster a strong school-home partnership. Donovan's Wellness Center offers individual and group counseling, tutoring, mentoring, and social skills building.
Donovan Middle School recognizes the importance of educating the whole child in a nurturing environment. Faculty and Staff promote learning strategies that enable students to live and communicate as responsible members of the global community. Science, technology, performing arts, and civic issues network into our curriculum. Donovan Middle School offers every student the PATH to a successful future.
