Star-Spangled Banner Scavenger Hunt

What is a Scavenger Hunt?

A scavenger hunt is a contest (one that is usually played at a party) in which players are sent out in pairs or small groups to get unusual objects without having to buy them.  The teams only have a certain amount of time to complete their hunt.  The group who brings back the most items on the list wins the contest.

Your job, a detective on the Scavenger Hunt…

For the next two classes, your task will be to go on an Internet scavenger hunt to look for pieces of information about the Star-Spangled Banner.

You will be responsible for reading all of the information that goes along with The Story of the Star-Spangled Banner, which you will get to automatically by clicking on the link listed at the end of these directions.

Start by looking at Question #1 and try to remember it in your head so that you can be looking for the answer to it as you read.

Next, look at the 1st page on your computer screen.  If you can’t see all of the picture and the words, scroll down so that all of the picture and text are showing and the background color is only beige (light brown).

HINT #1 – You can scroll down either by using the down and up arrows on your keyboard OR by using your mouse to drag the scroll bar down or click on arrows on the computer screen.

Read each page carefully – some pages have an answer on them and others don’t.  Sometimes you may even have to read through 4 or 5 pages until you get an answer.  Make sure not to skip a page or read it too fast or else you’ll get real lost very quickly!

Make sure to read the title of each page (the title always starts with a year or a date) and then read the text below it).  Also, make sure to read the information in the red box on each page.  Sometimes they will be fun facts, quotes, or vocab words.  Reading these will help you understand the history of the Star-Spangled Banner (S.S.B.) and be better prepared for any quizzes or tests on the S.S.B.  Looking at the pictures will help you to better understand what you are reading if you get confused.

HINT #2 ~ DON’T READ TOO FAST!!!  If you do, you will miss the answers.  The only time limit that you have is by the end of our 2nd day in the Computer Lab.  That means you have a total of an hour and 14 minutes to complete your scavenger hunt.

Once you are done reading a page, look back to the question on your worksheet.  See if you remember reading the answer on the page.  If you do, mark the answer down on the blank provided.

If you can’t find the answer on that page, look for the button that says “Next Event,” near the bottom of the page, click it once, and follow the same directions as you did for the first page.

HINT #3 - Remember to give the computer a few seconds & watch the Microsoft Windows icon.  If it’s moving, you’ll know that the computer is searching to find the next page and connect you to it.  If it’s not moving, it means you need to try clicking again (just once).

If you ever need to go back to a page that you already saw, click “Previous Event,” near the bottom of the page.   Click it just once.

That’s all you need to know in order to be a successful “detective” while on this scavenger hunt!  Now you’re ready to begin.

PLEASE WAIT UNTIL I TELL THE WHOLE CLASS

If you’ve followed these directions well, but are having trouble, you can raise you’re hand & ask questions to Mrs. McMullen.  You must have already tried really hard on your own or with your partner to find the answer, though.  Make sure you’ve followed all of these directions!

HAPPY HUNTING!!! =)
