The General Herkimer Library has a large collection of books which are especially meant for elementary students. We have over 16,000 books, over 100 videos related to curriculum, and many multiple copy sets of books for classroom use. Our goal is for students to become life-long learners who enjoy reading independently.
We are part of the Oneida Herkimer School Library System, which means that we can borrow books from other school libraries. This is wonderful because there are occasions when someone wants a book which we don't have. Using the Internet, we can request books from other school districts in the School Library System as well as other School Library Systems.
With the Internet, we have access to databases and eBooks through Search for Success. This can be accessed from the OPALS site linked to the library webpage. There is a link under the student and teacher resources tab and can be accessed from anywhere in school and at home. Search for Success is one of the best resources to use by students who have research assignments to complete.
All classes come to the library for 30 minutes each week, using a regular schedule for each class. Students may borrow books here and learn the responsibility of taking good care of them. Library lessons are geared to support the goals of our school and New York State standards for learning information skills. The students borrow books for reading enjoyment in fiction and non-fiction, at the same time increasing reading skills.
