2023 New York State Seal of Biliteracy Recipients

2023 New York State Seal of Biliteracy

The Utica City School District is proud to announce this year’s recipients of the 2023 New York State Seal of Biliteracy.  The New York State Seal of Biliteracy (NYSSB) recognizes high school graduates who have attained a high level of proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in one or more languages, in addition to English.  The intent of the NYSSB is to affirm the value of diversity in a multilingual society, encourage the study of languages, identify high school graduates with language and biliteracy skills for employers, provide universities with additional information about applicants seeking admission, prepare students with twenty-first century skills, and to recognize the value of world and home language instruction in schools.

This year, there were a total of 58 students that earned the Seal of Biliteracy in the following languages:  Burmese, French, Italian, Karen, Russian, Spanish, and Ukrainian.  Students will receive a certificate from Proctor High School, New York State Department of Education – Office of Bilingual Education and World Languages, a special medallion from NYSED, as well as purple and gold graduation cords.  A special thank you to the NYSSB Coordinators, Mrs. Fielteau (ENL Dept. Chair) and Mr. Nicholas-Hahn (World Languages Dept. Chair), as well as Mr. Szczesniak (Acting Principal), for their continued support of this program and the students. Congratulations to the Utica City School District NYSSB Class of 2023!
